Bright Star 81—conducted from October to December 1980 (fiscal year 1981)—began as a symbolic handshake between Cairo and Washington, but it quickly became something far more consequential. The exercise marked Egypt’s full strategic pivot into the US orbit after Camp David, anchoring a new era of interoperability, aid dependence, and political alignment. What looked like a simple joint drill in the desert was in fact the opening act in a long military partnership that reshaped Egypt’s doctrine, logistics, and security architecture.
