Bright Star 2023
The annual US-Egyptian military exercise Bright Star will commence on 31 August. Another thirty-two countries are taking part this year, including India for the first time. The event will last till 14 September.
A telling development in recent years has been the participation of the Egyptian Interior Ministry’s special forces in these multinational military exercises since 2021, which had long been confined to the armed forces. Not only is this a sign of the increasing militarization of the police, but it also reflects the strong cooperation between the components of the Egyptian repressive apparatus after the 2013 coup.
